Shark Sighting Report

NTA: Basking  Shark Sighting report submitted to the Shark Trust

All sightings from  6.5m RIB either within the Skerryvore area SW of Tiree or off Gott Bay (South of central Tiree) by certificated Marine Mammal Observer (MMO )

1)      Date: 22nd May 14:20hrs

Location of sitting:  56°27’.92N/06°44’.81W……………South Bank, Tiree

Weather: fine…high pressure….20c/ light SW wind 4knts

10m Basking Shark off Skerryvore May 2012

Group of 15. Variable size from 6 to 8m….swimming in WSW direction, followed at 2knts for 1hr @ 200m or less distance.

2)      Date: 24nd May 13:40hrs

Location of sitting:  56°20’.92N/07°10’.10W……………N of Stevenson’s Rock/ Skerryvore Reef area. SW of  Tiree

Weather: fine…high pressure….18c/ light variable wind 4/8knts

Group of 27. Variable size from 6 to 8m. Two large Sharks broaching, one of which was over 10m, seemed to have a white tag on dorsal fin…. Group swimming in no general direction. Seemed to be following the plankton flotsam, tide current edge NE , followed at 2knts for 1hr @ 200m or less distance.

Location of sitting:  56°27’.40N/07°07’.77W……………W of Outer hurricane Rock/ Skerryvore Reef area. W of  Tiree

Weather: fine…high pressure….18c/ light wind W less than 5knts

4)      Note: White marked large broaching shark with others (more than 10) @ 56°225’.52N/07°03’.22W returning to base ( Scarinish) Date: 24nd May 21:00hrs……..no pictures.
